Twenty First Sunday in Ordinary Time, 25th August 2013

St. Fiacre’s Well Mass
The annual novena to St. Fiacre ends on this Sunday afternoon with Mass at the well in Kilfera at 3.30pm.  Novena prayers will be recited from 3.15pm on this Sunday afternoon.
St. Fiacre’s Well is situated at Sheastown on the banks of the Nore.  The well is approached via the avenue of Sheastown House which is about two miles beyond the roundabout on the Bennettsbridge Road.  About fifty people gathered there each evening during the past week and we anticipate a much larger congregation on Sunday afternoon.  Why not come out and join us in this celebration which has continued uninterrupted for generations?  Bottled water from the well will be available on the day.
Thanks to the St. Fiacre’s Well Committee and all involved in organising this annual event.  Thanks, also, to the local landowners for their understanding and generous cooperation in allowing the novena to take place on private property.
All are welcome to attend the concluding Mass and, if you have been taking part in the novena, we pray the blessings you asked for will be granted through the intercession of  St. Fiacre.

At-Mass Survey
This weekend, at all Masses in our parish and across the Diocese of Ossory, a survey will take place to allow the Catholic community to share its view regarding vital plans under consideration by Bishop Freeman.  Our Bishop would like the opportunity to be given to all to participate in this opinion gathering exercise.  In this way, we hope that as we take the next steps in this endeavour, we will do so informed by as wide a body of opinion as possible.
Please take the time during Mass to read and consider the plans outlined and then fill in the survey provided.  All surveys are confidential and you can choose to give your contact details if you wish before returning the completed document.

A Man With a Mission
Pope Francis received a tremendous welcome on his recent visit to Brazil for World Youth Day. Three million young people joined him on the beach at Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro “to meet Jesus and feel the warmth of his mercy and love”. Mercy is one of Pope Francis favourite words.  He uses it often to describe personal encounters in prayer and the sacraments with Jesus.
Pope Francis is clear in his mission “to win hearts and minds, to boost the faithful, speaking a language for our times”. To a church of people full of hope throughout the week, in Brazil he stressed the importance of a Church that has to be renewed at the grass roots level.
“We want to build a Church that is big enough to accommodate all humanity. Don't look at the thorns and the stones but on the small grain of soil where seed can be sown”.
On his return journey to Rome, Pope Francis spoke directly to journalists for a full 80 minutes with no questions filtered and nothing off the record. He answered without notes and never refused to take a question. Gentleness and mercy were central to his responses.  The Holy Spirit is powerfully at work in the ministry and mission of our new Pope.
