Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 19th July 2015

Refurbishment of St. Patrick’s Church
At last we have come to the end of the re-roofing of St. Patrick's Church.  It has been a long few weeks but the end result is worth it. Not only have we a secure and weather proof roof for the years ahead, hopefully, come winter everyone will also FEEL the benefits.
Many thanks to everyone for their patience and understanding during this construction work. Thanks also for the kind words of encouragement we have received from parishioners and elsewhere.
There is a small amount of work to be carried out in the sanctuary in August but this should only take about 4 days.  The work carried out in St. Patricks’ church :
· Insulate are re-slate the main church and sacristy.
· Re-lead and rebuild the chimney stack.
· Re-slate and repair the bell tower.
· Re-point the pinnacles.
· Rebuild and re-fit new gullies and downpipes.
· Repair a main truss beam inside the church.
When the final bills have been finalised we will give a breakdown of the costs associated with this project.
Thanks to PM Cantwell Ltd for their professionalism and hard work over the last number of weeks. Thanks also to Dermot O’Shea of Kelly Partnership and Joe Meagher from the Diocesan Buildings Committee.
People may have noticed the removal and reorganising of pews in the church. This was to allow better access for wheelchairs and the general public. We hope to make this a permanent feature to make the church more accessible for people.

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 12th July 2015

Jesus Summons the Twelve Apostles
God has given you an unique mission;
The Church calls you to be an unique missionary.
“God has created me to do Him some definite service.  He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.  I have my mission.  I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.
He has not created me for naught.  I shall do good; I shall do His work.  I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments.
Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away.  If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him.  If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him.  He does nothing in vain.  He knows what He is about.  He may take away my friends.  He may throw me among strangers.  He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.”
John Henry Newman

St. Swithin’s Day
St Swithin’ Day if thou dost rain be, for forty days it will remain
St Swithin’ Day if thou be fair for forty days ‘twill rain nae mair.
On the 15th July, St. Swithin’s Day, many people are on alert for the weather forecast.  According to tradition, if the sun shines on this date, forty days sunshine are in store.  But alas if it rains, forty days of downpour will follow.
Jane Struthers informs us in her book, Red Sky at Night, that the Meteorological Office researched this theory and declared it to be without foundation.
St. Swithin was bishop of Winchester in England and wished to be buried out of doors breaking with the tradition of bishops being buried in the cathedral.  Nine years later an attempt was made to exhume his body and take it to the cathedral but gales blew, rain fell and the attempt had to be abandoned.
Let us be happy and patient with whatever weather God sends us as patience brings relief. Say the following prayer and one never knows what will happen:
Lord God send us rain but not wet weather,
may tomorrow’s amount fall tonight.  Amen.

Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 5th July 2015

Many thanks
Fr. Roderick would like to thank all of those who organised and celebrated with him his recent silver jubilee Mass.  It was a wonderful celebration and very much appreciated by all. Thank you also for your good wishes, the many cards and gifts received. Be assured of his continued blessings. Mass will be offered for your intentions.

Be with us Lord
Be with us Lord during the month of July. The month devoted to the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ.  Schools are closed and families are going on holidays at home and abroad.  Let us remember those Irish people who died tragically recently in foreign lands.  Jesus comfort and console their relatives who are sad and heartbroken.  Let us not forget to praise and glorify God in our daily lives as we enjoy, take pleasure in and rejoice in the summer sunshine.
The Pope’s intentions for July are: That political responsibility may be lived at all levels as a high form of charity.
That, amid social inequalities, Latin American Christians may bear witness to love for the poor and contribute to a more fraternal society.  Here is a lovely prayer for the month of July as we seek God’s goodness.
Faith, hope, and love
Be my guiding light.
Add patience, O Lord
To lend help to all the three.  Amen .

Refurbishment of St. Patrick’s Church
We have come to the final phase of the renovation project at St. Patrick’s Church.  This is repairing the main roof truss over the altar which, over the years, has developed cracks on both sides and needs to be repaired. Work will commence on Monday and will involve placing a large amount of scaffolding in the sanctuary of the church.  This aspect of the work will take about 5 days and during this period we ask for your patience and understanding.  As we do not wish to cancel Masses in St. Patrick’s Church we propose using a portable altar.
During these few days of construction it will not be possible to facilitate funeral Masses; both St. Fiacre’s Church and  Foulkstown Church are available should the need arise. Thanks again for your patience and understanding.

The Pope: A Leader for Life?
The Roman Catholic Church should not have “leaders for life” in its ranks, otherwise it would risk being like a country under dictatorship, Pope Francis said on Friday.  Francis, 78, has said before that he would be ready to resign instead of ruling for life if he felt he could not continue running the Church for health or other reasons.
“Let's be clear. The only one who cannot be substituted in the Church is the Holy Spirit,” the pontiff said in an address at an inter-denominational rally of Christians in St. Peter’s Square.  “There should be a time limit to positions (in the Church), which in reality are positions of service,” he said in an address that was in part prepared and in part extemporaneous.
(zenit.org)
Making clear his comments were not confined to the clergy, Francis added: “It is convenient that all (positions) in the Church should have a time limit. There are no leaders for life in the Church. This occurs in some countries where a dictatorship exists.”
