Bishop Peter Birch

           – a Centenary Celebration

A number of events have been arranged locally to mark the 100^th anniversary of the birth of Bishop Peter Birch (4^th September 1911) and the 30^th anniversary of his death (7^th March 1981).   Bishop Birch, a native of Conahy Parish, was Bishop of Ossory from 1962 until his unexpected death in 1981.

On this Sunday, 11^th September Bishop Seamus Freeman will be the principal concelebrant at concelebrated Mass in Jenkinstown Church at 12.15pm.

Later that afternoon Sr. Stanislaus Kennedy RSC will lead a short contemplative walk through Jenkinstown Wood, starting at the walled area on the right of the forest entrance and progressing to St. Colman’s Well.

At 3.30pm a local remembrance will be held in Conahy Shamrock’s GAA Clubhouse.  This will include ‘A Place in History: Peter Birch, Tullowglass, Conahy and Ossory’, a short presentation by Denis Bergin on Peter Birch in a local context.

At 8.00pm at the Club House Hotel, Patrick Street, Tim Pat Coogan will present ‘Peter Birch and the Vanishing Ireland’.  Mr. Coogan, historian and author, will include personal reminiscences of Peter Birch and an assessment of his significance as churchman and thinker in the Ireland of his times.  This will be followed by refreshments and an informal gathering.

St. Joseph's Young Priests Society

The annual general meeting of the parish conference of the St. Joseph’s Young Priests Society will be held at St. Patrick’s Parish Centre on Friday, 16th September immediately after the 10.30am Mass.  New members are welcome.

First Holy Communion 2012

Q. Does God intervene on earth?  If so, why in some cases and not in others?

A. We believe that God intervened mightily on earth in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  He told us to ask, to search and to knock on the door.  He told parables about persevering in prayer but he never said that every petition would be answered directly.  He gave the example of how a loving parent answers a child but not by giving anything that would be dangerous.  We must allow that God, with a wider view of affairs and a timescale that reaches into eternity, answers our prayer in a way that we may not perceive at the moment.

9/11 Service of Remembrance

A service of Remembrance to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 will take place on Sunday, 11th September at the City Hall, Kilkenny at 7.00pm.  The service will be hosted by Mr. David Fitzgerald, Mayor of Kilkenny.  Bishop Freeman and members of other churches will lead the prayers.  Music will be provided by the Kilkenny Gospel Choir and St. Patrick’s Brass Band.  All welcome.

Family Communications & Self Esteem

The Health Promotion Department of the HSE South is planning to run a  Family Communication and Self Esteem course in Kilkenny.  This 8 week course is designed to help parents explore how they communicate with their children, to support them in the good job they are already doing and provide an opportunity to talk to other parents.  The course is free and is intended for parents of 9 - 17 year olds.  Venue: The Drum Youth Centre, McDonagh Junction every Thursday 10.15am - 12.45pm from 6th October.  Information: 056 776 1400.

New Club For People In Their 20s

Made For Each Other

‘Turning the front door knob, it came to him that maybe he could sponge away the look of loneliness that he’d seen in Susan’s eyes – and John was now pretty sure it was loneliness he’d seen, despite the smiles and the confidences.  If he’d learned one thing while he’d been away, it was that loneliness and the open discussion of loneliness is the most taboo subject in the world.  Forget sex or politics or religion.  Or even failure.  Loneliness is what clears out a room’ – Douglas Coupland, Miss Wyoming.

Many of us have experienced loneliness at one time or another.  We hear a lot of talk these days about a modern sense of loneliness and isolation, in spite of advancements in mobile technology and the growth of online communities.  Yet relationships are at the heart of who we are as human beings.

The Gospel of Matthew begins and ends with reassurance that we are not alone.  At the beginning we are told the one who is coming will be called Emmanuel, meaning ‘God is with us’, and it concludes with the words of Jesus ‘I am with you always, to the very end of the age’.  And here in the middle we have Jesus’ assurance: ‘Where two or three meet in my name, I shall be there with them.’

Today’s Gospel speaks to us about relationships, and lets us know that God is with us in and through our relationships with other people – when we gather in his name, he is there too.

Q. Why does God not appear in person or by way of a burning bush or booming voice to make it a bit easier to believe?

A. Would such a manifestation move people to believe in the sense of committing themselves in mind and heart to God?  When God spoke on earth through the life of Jesus Christ, despite his inspiring message and deeds of healing and compassion, he was rejected by many and crucified!  ‘If they will not listen either to Moses or to the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone should rise from the dead’ (Luke 16:31).  Signs from God are not lacking.  People who do not want to believe will somehow find a reason to reject any sign.  It’s not wonders that we lack but wonderment.

Talking in Church

Following a number of complaints from people trying to pray before and after Mass, we appeal to all to maintain an air of prayerful silence in our churches. 
This is particularly a problem in St. Fiacre’s Church where unnecessary noise levels have been getting out of hand as of late. Please help us to provide an atmosphere of prayerful silence in church.  Thank you.

First Saturday Devotion

The usual devotions on the first Saturday of the month will take place in St. Fiacre’s Church on this Saturday, 3rd September after 6.15pm Mass.  Prayers and adoration will end at 9.00pm.  All are welcome.

S.O.S. is a Voluntary Organisation for adults with a mild/moderate intellectual disability. S.O.S. provides day services, respite and residential care. We are looking for families to provide breaks in their home for adults from our services.  Nominal expenses are paid.

We are also looking for volunteers to support us in providing extra social and recreational activities for people in S.O.S. 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 14th August 2011

World Youth Day 2011 In 1985, the UN declared the International Year of Youth and Pope John Paul II followed suit by creating an event for young Christians to meet, to acknowledge their faith and to come together in peace and celebration: ‘I want to meet with you, to listen to you and to hear about your life...’ (John Paul II). 

Twenty-six years later this legacy lives on as this week one million young adults from around the world will descend on Madrid for the World Youth Day (WYD) events.  Consider an intimate life-changing retreat combined with a crowded rock concert – at WYD the Church is alive and it is young.  Four young people from St. Patrick’s Parish will join hundreds of pilgrims from Ireland and take part in this enormous festival of faith.  In a world where secularism and atheism are considered to be neutral stances this festival gives young people permission to celebrate their faith, to stand up and say, YES I am a Christian!  Please remember these pilgrims in your prayers this week as they journey with one another:

Lord, You have called our young people to make a journey of faith, and with the help of Your Spirit they have heard and answered the word You have spoken in their hearts.  Teach them to choose life and to choose what is just.  Help them to share with other the life You promise, especially in service of the poor.  Lead our young pilgrims along the way Lord, and make safe their journey to Madrid, to You and the life You promise. World Youth Day Pilgrims
Sadly, there will not be an official Ossory presence at this year’s World Youth Day celebrations in Madrid.  However, we are delighted to know that four young people from our parish will travel with groups organised by the Dominican Fathers and the Loreto Sisters.  We wish our pilgrims well and promise to include them in our prayers during the coming week.

15th August is a Holy Day

This Monday is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  It is a holyday of obligation for all Catholics.  Beginning with the Vigil Masses on Sunday evening at 6.15pm and 7.00pm the Masses for this holyday  follow our usual weekend timetable.

The Parish Centre will be closed on Monday.

Our friends at St. Mary’s Cathedral have asked us to remind you that there will be no 5.30pm Mass at the Cathedral on this Sunday.  However, the feastday Vigil Mass will be celebrated there at 8.00pm on Sunday.

Q. Was there any message from Our Lady to the visionaries at Knock?

A.  No words were spoken but the silent vision contained a most profound message.  Mary is not at the focal point of the vision but she is drawing our attention to the lamb standing on the altar, beneath the cross.  Between Mary and the altar, Saint John holds open the book of scripture, representing the liturgy of the word at the start of Mass.  The surrounding angels are a reminder that at Mass we are already participating in the perfect glorification of the Father.  The message of Knock is to contemplate the wonder of the Mass.

Attention Eucharistic Ministers

Please keep in mind that Ministers of the Eucharist are not to give extra Communion Hosts to those who present a pyx or request an extra host.  Such requests should be brought to the priest at Mass and not the ministers. Genuine people commissioned to bring Communion to the housebound are aware at this stage that they should approach the priest to request an extra host. 

Those receiving Holy Communion should consume the host at the altar steps and not bring it back to their seats.  When necessary a priest or Eucharistic Minister will happily  take Holy Communion to those at Mass who are unable to approach the sanctuary.

It is never permissible to remove a Sacred Host from the church without explicit permission from the priest.

We congratulate and thank all who work to keep the open spaces in our parish in top class condition.  All are volunteers and give their time and talent to keep our property around St. Patrick’s, St. Fiacre’s and St. Joseph’s in wonderful condition for the benefit of all.  Take a bow - you are doing great work.

Kilkenny Contact
Kilkenny Contact exists to hold out a hand of friendship and support to all older people in Kilkenny City and County.  Our main aim is to provide weekly visits for people who may feel lonely or isolated.  We do this by recruiting and training volunteers in visitation and communication with older people.  All our volunteers are registered with Volunteer Centre of Ireland and obtain Garda Clearance before visiting. 

Volunteers needed: We are looking for volunteers who are sincere, dependable, fun and friendly and have a genuine willingness to help.  We provide a training course and support for all our volunteers.  If you are an elderly person or if you know of an elderly people who may benefit from these visits please contact: 056 775 1988 or 086 410 8902.

As part of Kilkenny’s Positive Ageing Plans for September, Musical Workshops will take place for the over 50s weekly from Tuesday 16^th August at 7.30pm in the Kilkenny Ormond Hotel. The workshops will culminate in the re-staging of “The Good Old Days” music hall variety show on 25^th September. Fun Field Day

The Kilkenny Rugby Club, Foulkstown will hold a fun field day for all ages on this Sunday,  14th August from 2.00pm to 6.00pm.  Items range from cake stalls, bouncy castles, wheel of fortune, pony rides, for the older youth penalty shoot out, strong man demonstrations, long puck and many more. 

Live bands including Marble City Band with a live D.J. all day.  Please come and support.

Loughboy Library

The Circus Stars Summer Reading Challenge finishes on Friday, 19th August.  Please return completed registration cards to the library and you will receive an invitation to the awards party in mid-September. 

A mixed-media exhibition by the locally based KK Art Group will run until 26th August.
