29th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 16th October, 2011

Focus on what matters
Jesus’ opponents in today’s Gospel challenge Jesus as if they were asking for friendly advice on their taxes.  It is a dangerous question because if Jesus gives a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer he risks losing popularity or being reported to the authorities.  Jesus sees through these guts and delivers a brilliant response: ‘Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.’  This text has sometimes been used to argue that religion should stay out of politics, economics or culture but building a Kingdom of justice requires that we are actively involved in those things.  The world we live in is one that often falls short of the values of the Kingdom that Jesus preached.  To be a witness to Jesus means that all aspects of our lives should be Kingdom focused and this includes whatever political, economical or cultural issues we are confronted with.  The focus in this passage is getting out priorities straight.  Give Caesar his taxes but do not forget what belongs to God i.e. things that are so important we cannot compromise them – family, friends, compassion, justice...

Questions people ask
I am a reader at Mass.  Will the changes at Mass involve new readings?  Do I need a new book to practise the readings at home?
There are two books for Mass, the Lectionary (containing the Scripture Readings) and the Missal or Sacramentary, used at the altar, containing the prayers of the Mass.  There are no changes in the Lectionary so you don’t need to get a new book for your readings.

New Collection Methods
Following new regulations from the diocese regarding the first and second offering collections at all Masses, we have begun to implement some changes.  Most noticeable is in St. Fiacre’s Church where the collection plates are now placed in a basket at the altar and brought to the sacristy after Mass where it is bagged and deposited in a secure safe.  This is being done to address a security concern where the sacristy is located at the back of the church and is vulnerable to intrusion and attack during Mass.  We do not want to see a situation where a sacristan or collector is injured by some individual who might see an opportunity to steal money.  We are thankful to our collectors and sacristans who are willing to take on these new changes and their faithful work is appreciated.

28th Sunday in Ordinary Time, 9th October, 2011

A Real Royal Wedding
Today’s Gospel is difficult. Stories of judgement, weeping and gnashing of teeth just don’t appeal to most people.  Failure to turn up to a dinner party was of course bad manners.  To refuse an invite to a royal wedding was even more serious.  To kill the servants or messengers who came to you with the invite...well that is pushing things a bit far.  As with all parables, there is more to this than meets the eye.  God wants to be in a relationship with each of us.  We are all invited to his banquet.  We exclude ourselves from being in fellowship with him, from his hospitality, when we give God the brush-off.  We sometimes do our best to put ourselves outside of his presence.  So what host would not be offended?  And what about that poor chap who did come but was not suitably dressed?  If we accept the invitation we should be ready for change and not just change of an outer garment.  The issue for Matthew is the replacement of the unworthy in the community with those who have responded to Jesus’ demands for his kingdom.  And as usual, they are not the people you would expect!

Questions People Ask
Do you expect great problems when the changes come into the Mass?
It will be difficult for people who find it hard to read the new translation on leaflets or missalettes.  But once people get familiar with the new translation there should be no problem.  People adapted very quickly to the Euro currency and to the ban on smoking in public places.  And the Lord won’t be one bit upset if, through years of habit, some people say the old responses.

Finding My Role in God’s plan
Today, designated by the Church as the ‘Day for Life’, celebrates the dignity of life from conception to natural death.  These words by Blessed John Henry Newman remind us that regardless of whatever situations we may find ourselves in, we are all part of God’s plan for this world:  ‘God has created me to do Him some definite service.  He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another.  I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next.  I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.  He has not created me for naught.  I shall do good; I shall do His work.  I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep his commandments.  Therefore , I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away.  If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him.  If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him.  He does nothing in vain.  He knows what He is about.  He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers.  He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.’

Questions People Ask
Q.  I hear there are to be changes in the Mass.  Are these major changes and what will they involve?
A.  There are no changes to the structure of the Mass but only to the translation of various prayers and responses.  The prayers and responses which have been in use for nearly 40 years have not been changed in the official Latin version but the translations into all the different languages have been revised so as to make them more accurate and reverential.  The Our Father has not been changed but some of the familiar responses will have to be relearned.  See it in a positive way as a chance to wake us up from rattling off these prayers to pray them in a fresh way..

Holy Communion Abuse
Last week, one of our faithful cleaners found a communion wafer (host) under a seat in the main body of St. Patrick’s Church.  This host had, more than likely, been received at one of the previous Sunday Masses and then brought back to the seat by some person where they either dropped it or discarded it.  Either way, such misuse of the Body of Christ is totally unacceptable and is tantamount to sacrilege.
We remind those receiving Holy Communion that they must consume the host the moment they receive it at the altar.  They MUST NOT take the sacred host back to their seat.
We appeal to Eucharistic Ministers to keep a watchful eye on those who are receiving Holy Communion and if they notice someone walking away with a host, note where the person goes and inform the priest.
A further reminder to Ministers: if approached by someone with a pyx and looking for an extra host, send them to the priest.  Thanks for your cooperation.
