34th Sunday in Ordinary time, 26th November 2017

What sort of king is this?
From a very young age, children tend to hear a lot about  royalty.  Popular  fairytales,  many  of  them around for hundreds of  years, tell tales of beautiful princesses, brave princes, and noble, wise, old kings and queens. They transport children into a world of extravagant palaces and riches beyond anything they could  imagine.  Modern  children’s  stories  and  cartoons continue  the fascination, but  many now  turn the traditional stereotypes  on their head. Princesses
no longer wait around to be rescued, but take their fate into their own hands. Princes don’t necessarily want to be brave or to become the next king.
In the time of Jesus kings were powerful rulers, and  some  were  tyrants.  We  know  from  earlier  in Matthew’s Gospel that King Herod was capable of brutal  acts.  There  were  expectations  too  about  the great Messianic  King  who  would  lead  a  rebellion and establish his kingdom on earth.
The king that Jesus talks about turns these images upside  down.  He  is  a  fair  judge,  a  shepherd  who looks after his flock, inviting all who act with justice and generosity to take their place in his kingdom. He is  also  in  solidarity  with  the  ‘least’  of  his  people. Who ever heard of a king who knows what it’s like to  be  in  need  of  food,  clothing  or  company?  But Jesus is a different sort of royalty. His kingdom is not based  on power or riches,  but  charity, compassion and forgiveness.

Thank you

It is with a deep sense of sadness that we say goodbye to a number of Religious Sisters from our parish, who will take their leave of us over the coming days. Last week some sisters from St. Patrick’s Convent on the Kells Road left to take up residence in a number of houses in Dublin. This week some of our Sisters from the St. John of God Convent will take up residence in their new Convent in Wexford. The Sisters of Charity have had a presence and mission within our parish since 1879 while the Sisters of St. John of God have been serving our parish community since 1876. With gratitude we give thanks for your time with us and for your ministry in our parish community. We are delighted that a number of sisters from the St. John of God and Sisters of Charity Communities will remain with us here is St. Patrick’s Parish to continue their presence and mission for the time being. We ask God’s blessing on those who take their leave and we pray that you will be happy in your new home. Though we may be separated by the miles, we are united always in our faith and trust in the One God. “Alone with none but thee, my God, I journey on my way: what need I fear when thou art near, O King of night and day? more safe am I within thy hand than if a host should round me stand.”

Are you ready?

‘It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.’
Hugh Laurie
I’m not ready – we all think it or say it from time to time. It could be as simple as not being able to find your shoes to leave the house, or a more serious situation like being under-prepared for a work presentation. It can also refer to our emotional state – we might not be ready to talk about an experience, to change a habit, to enter into a relationship, or to let go of a loved one. No one else can tell us if we are ready for a situation or not. It is something only we know. But there is some wisdom in the quote above, in that sometimes we need to push ourselves, to just dive in.
The parable in today’s gospel pits two groups in stark contrast – the foolish bridesmaids who failed to prepare, and the sensible ones who were ready with their lamps and oil. Both groups fell asleep on the job, but only one group had laid the groundwork and so were ready for action. Jesus tells us we need to be watchful and ready. As well as having the light of faith, we need the fuel – the actions – to keep it lit so we are ready when the Lord comes.

Practise what you preach

We have all heard the expression ‘Do as I say, not as I do’. According to one  online dictionary, it is ‘an expression  used  to  call  out  hypocrites,  including “environmentalists” with private jets, politicians who send their children to private school while opposing measures  to  give  other  kids  the  same  chance,  or those who accuse others of racism while not hiring minorities’. We could all come up with examples of people who do not practise what they preach. The accusation appears to have been made for the Scribes  and the  Pharisees that  Jesus talks  about in today’s gospel. He criticises them for placing heavy burdens on people, while not lifting a finger to help them, and for making themselves look important in order to attract attention. If we are honest with ourselves, there are  areas  of  our own lives  where  we value style over substance, where we wish to give a certain impression to others that does not reflect the truth of the matter. We  like  to  look good, and for people to think highly of us.
There are also times when we do not live up to the expectations we set for others. We expect people to be honest and fair with us, yet we are not always honest in our dealings with others. We expect others to help us, but we might not always repay the favour. Today’s  gospel  is  a wake-up  call.  It  tells  us  what Jesus expects of us. We must be humble and genuine,  thinking  of  others  rather  than  worrying  about what people will think of us.

Charity and Dignity

A number of years ago, I began working for a well-known homeless charity. At the induction week we had the privilege of being addressed by a leading campaigner against homelessness in Dublin city. ‘Do not give broken cups to broken people’ resonated from the address and has stayed with me ever since.
As acts of charity many people are often inclined to give or donate old items that they no longer have use for. Within this there is a sincere act of generosity and perhaps a desire of not letting anything go to waste. However, there is a challenge here to consider the recipient’s feelings on being handed worn out clothes, almost out of date food or damaged toys. How, perhaps, is this impacting on their feeling of worth in society today? Are they not worthy of some new clothes to regain their sense of pride? Some fresh and tasty food to nourish their bodies? Some new, clean toys, the same as other children their age?
These are superficial examples but point towards a challenge to society to provide services of the highest standards to vulnerable people. History and even recent news stories from both home and abroad have presented infuriating examples time and again. Good intentions need to be coupled with thoughtfulness and a determination to give only the best to our neighbour most in need, to show them that they are respected and loved.

The Third Side of the Coin

Most of us have been raised to believe that there are two sides to every issue. So often we hear the term ‘there are two sides to every story’ or ‘two sides of a coin’ but there is, in fact, a third. A story always has your version, their version, and the truth. When it comes to a coin, there is the head side, the tail side, and the edge of the coin! One side of the coin may represent a particular point of view; the other its opposite. However, if we just stand the coin on its edge, we can see both sides more clearly and, more often than not, a third way.
What a loaded question the Pharisees’ disciples and the Herodians asked Jesus. If Jesus said the taxes shouldn’t be paid, he would have pleased the Pharisees but then they could report him and have him arrested as a rebel. If he said they should be paid, he would have gained the support of the Herodians but almost certainly lost all support from his followers.
But Jesus did not come into the world to discuss Roman taxation, temporal revolutions or political action. Neither did he come to only see two sides of a coin! He neither endorses Caesar as divine sovereign (as the inscription on the coin indicates) nor does he discourage the paying of taxes. He simply reminds his questioners that these are worldly affairs in a worldly kingdom but there is another kingdom yet to come with a much higher authority. ‘Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God.’

Where is God?

As someone who has willingly left these shores to assist people on the margins, I am familiar with the inhumanity of man to his fellow man, where millions of people are left to their own devices, forgotten in their own poverty. The I’m alright attitude permeates not just the so called ‘developing world’; it is alive and well here in Ireland.
Does God, like the absentee landowner in the gospel parable, leave us and depart for another country? A personal relationship with anybody means that the person is present. God should be no different. God is deep within our heart, not something out there and distant! I battle with the castigation of the high priests and elders, the negative portrayal of the people of God, and the raw deal for the slaves that came to rescue the situation. Is this the forgiving God that out of the worst injustices can transform human hearts?
So where is the hope? Jesus doesn’t condemn in the passage: he invites us to understand his meaning. He asks the elders what they would do. This question is asked of us too.
Jesus then refocuses the parable: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’. This is the high point of this gospel, where Jesus reminds us of the marvel that he is: the one that was rejected, the one that was overlooked – the one abandoned by us. It is this stone, this rock, that becomes our Saviour. The rock symbolises one who never leaves us. God loves us not because we are good but because God is good.

Seeing Life through the lens of the Gospels

Matthew 21:33-43
  1. The target audience of this allegorical parable are the Jewish chief priests and elders portrayed here as rejecting Jesus and his teaching, and as a consequence losing out on what God was offering them. It is a story of opportunity for life presented and rejected, and they lose out in the process. How important have you found it to recognise and accept opportunities for growth, development and new life when these were presented to you?
  2. The parable is also a cautionary tale about the destructive effects of greed – doing violence to the rights of others and eventually destroying the greedy themselves. What attitude towards possessions has helped you to be at peace in yourself and at peace with others?
  3. The vineyard of the Lord is an image for God’s people. As we look at the vineyard we have been given we can ask ourselves ‘are we good tenants?’ Recall times when you have been a good tenant, and reached out caringly for those around you.
  4. ‘It was the stone rejected by the builders that became the keystone. This was the Lord’s doing and it was wonderful to see’. Sometimes a person not highly regarded plays a key role in a project, and it is wonderful to see. Can you recall examples of this?

What is Mission?

What does it mean to be a missionary? I have held to a variety of definitions since I first identified myself as one. When I first went out ‘on mission’, it was clear to me that mission was strictly limited to making disciples of all nations, to bring people in to the faith. During my first long term placement in Uganda I met my husband, who identified as a missionary, but shockingly he was a carpenter, and had never led a single Bible study. Could he truly be a missionary if his day to day work was (as I saw it) so mundane?
As I watched how he gave all of himself to build beautiful, strong buildings that would benefit so many people, my eyes were opened. He developed quality relationships with the builders he worked with, and the skills he taught them completely trans-formed their lives. And it was all motivated by his faith in Jesus.
On return to Europe I struggled with no longer being a missionary. I couldn’t see how I could honestly respond ‘I will go’, and mean it, because I was-n’t going anywhere!
So I redefined (again!) my concept of mission. For me, mission is bringing about the kingdom of God, wherever we find ourselves in the world. I will go, even if ‘go’ means ‘stay’.

Day for Life 2017

Day for Life is celebrated annually by the Catholic Church in Ireland, Scotland and England and Wales. It is a day dedicated to celebrating and upholding the dignity of human life from conception to natural death. This year’s Day for Life will be celebrated in Ireland on Sunday 1st October on the theme ‘Fostering a Culture that Protects Life and Respects Women’.
Leaflets available at the back of the churches.
“The gift of a new child, entrusted by the Lord to a father and mother, begins with acceptance, continues with lifelong protection and has as its final goal the joy of eternal life. By serenely contemplating the ultimate fulfilment of each human person, parents will be even more aware of the precious gift entrusted to them. For God allows parents to choose the name by which he himself will call their child for all eternity”
–Pope Frances, Amoris Laetitia, 116.

Prayer to Mary, Mother of the Life Within
O Mary, Mother of the Life Within,
all life we entrust to you;
The life of every expectant mother
and the child within her womb:
The life of every human body,
the life of every human soul;
The life of every newborn child
and the life of all grown old.
You held the Lord to your own heart
and drew Him so close in.
So draw us now in all our needs,
O Mother of the Life Within.
Amen.

I am a grumbler

Many of Jesus’ parables are difficult. We are invited to place ourselves in the story. Which character do we identify with? To which group would we be-long? Sometimes we find ourselves sympathising with the character who turns out to be in the wrong. God’s ways are not our ways!
The parable of the labourers in the vineyard is one of those tricky ones. We are drawn into the story, and we feel some sympathy for the crowd who end up grumbling at the landowner. These early birds who were hired at daybreak have done the most work. They have toiled all day in the heat, doing far more labour than those who were hired only at the last minute – yet they all receive the same pay. It’s hardly fair, is it?
But the landowner makes his point: ‘Why be envious because I am generous?’ Of course, Jesus anticipates the discomfort of his audience. He uses parables to gently pull the rug from under their feet, to challenge their assumptions, and offer them a new way of thinking that is focused not on themselves, but on the wider community.
Place yourself in the story. If you identify with the grumblers, ask yourself why. Why should we be concerned about what others are getting? Who are we to judge what others deserve? Surely we, too, should want God’s love and blessings to be extended to everyone!

Generous love

A remarkable story of generosity featured on Joe Duffy's Liveline: Call Back programme on RTÉ recently. It was the story of Shane O'Neill, who had a history of drugs offences and ended up serving time in prison in Belgium. On release from prison he went to the Irish Embassy to ask for the price of a flight to return home, but was turned down. Another Irish man, Charlie Kiernan, overheard the exchange and decided to help, booking him a flight and buying him breakfast. When Shane asked how he could repay him, Charlie suggested he 'pay it forward'. The kind gesture was the catalyst for Shane turning his life around.
It is this sort of generous love that we hear about in today's gospel, in the parable told by Jesus. The master who cancels the servant's debt does so out of compassion and generosity. It is of no benefit to him to pardon the debt. He will be down ten thousand talents - one talent was worth more than 15 years' wages of a labourer, so we are talking about a large sum of money! The servant is grateful, but not so grateful that he is willing to take pity on a fellow servant who owes him just one hundred denarii - one denarius was the usual day's wage for a labourer.
The parable speaks to us about the kindness of God, but also what he expects from us. Because we have been loved, we must love. Because we have been forgiven, we must forgive.

World Meeting of Families

For the past year, the Church in Ireland has been preparing for the World Meeting of Families which will be held in Dublin from 22nd to 26th August 2018. Two years ago, the Pope Francis selected Ire- land to host this event with the theme 'The Gospel of the Family, Joy for the World'. It is a great blessing for the Church and for Ireland. The Pope is expected to attend. Saint John Paul 11 established the World Meeting of Families in 1994 as an international event of prayer, catechesis and celebration. It is held every three years and it unites families worldwide in prayer and meditation on the central place of marriage and family, the cornerstone of our life, society and the Church.
Let us pray for the success of the World Meeting of Families.
Lord Jesus, bless all families throughout the world. Give comfort and solace to those who are burdened with ill health, anxiety or sorrow. May they always be steadfast in faith. Amen.
