The Most Holy Trinity, 26th May 2013

Parish Accounts for 2012
The Parish Finance Committee today publishes a summary of the parish accounts for 2012.  Copies are available at the back of the churches this weekend.  As you will see the outcome for the year has been good and we thank sincerely all who continue to generously support the parish and its priests.
While we appreciate the current difficult financial climate we appeal to all parishioners to play a fair part in supporting the parish, its ministries and outreaches by contributing regularly by standing order or through the weekly envelopes.

The Most Holy Trinity
This weekend we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity.  At the heart of God, there is a community of three persons - the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  This relationship is a sharing of life and love - an instant giving and receiving between three distinct persons.
We are inserted into the Life of the Trinity.  All that we receive is really gained to be shared again with others; there is no room for individualism. The mystery of the Trinity can be defined as sharing generously with others with the mind of Christ. Without probing the mystery of the Trinity, we try to live the Spirit that it embodies - our Christian relationship with one another.
Jesus speaks of our intimate relationship with the Triune God “Anyone who loves me will heed what I say then my Father will love him and we will come and make our abode with Him” (John 14:33). Again in Ephesians 3:19 “May you be filled with the fullness of God” and “I live not I but Christ lives in me” (Gal 2:20): all that means is that a mystical union exists between God and ourselves. The life of God flows through us. We are His eyes; His heart and speech reaching out to others. We embody Him.

Pentecost Sunday
By virtue of our Baptism and Confirmation we too are temples of the Holy Spirit. Yet, this Spirit is not a spirit of weakness or timidity as clearly shown in the imagery and language used by Luke. The Spirit emboldened the Apostles and drove them out of their hiding place to courageously and intrepidly preach the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ, a message that would ultimately lead to new life, new hope and resurrection.  In the same way, the Spirit by
virtue of its gifts and fruits should enliven our faith, deepen our convictions and strengthen our resolve.

The Ascension of the Lord
The last we know about people is their death. When Jesus died, his disciples thought that was the end for him too. They were shattered by it because for them it meant that they faced a future without hope. After the resurrection, their faith was renewed and their hope was reborn. But they also knew that Jesus had to return to the Father.
The Ascension of Jesus is a significant event. We celebrate Jesus’ return to the Father, which means that the apostles could no longer see him physically. He is in God and is now present through His Spirit, in all aspects of our lives.
In Luke’s story, Jesus has to go so that he can send the Holy Spirit. He told the apostles that they had to wait in Jerusalem for the coming of the Holy Spirit. They could not begin their mission until they were empowered by the Holy Spirit. The Ascension marks the completion of Christ’s mission and the beginning of the power of the Spirit.
