The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, 2nd November 2014

The Faithful Departed
All Souls’ Day is traditionally celebrated on 2nd November. This day specifically commemorates the departed faithful who have not yet been purified and reached heaven. Catholics celebrate All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day in the fundamental belief that there is a prayerful spiritual communion between those in the state of grace who have died and are either being purified in purgatory or are in heaven (the ‘Church penitent’ and the ‘Church triumphant’, respectively), and the ‘Church militant’ who are the living.
It is traditional on All Souls day to pray for the dead, by attending Mass and visiting (where possible), the graves of the deceased.  People also like to light a candle on this day in memory of those who have died.

November Lists of the Dead
Throughout November we remember in a special way our loved ones who have died.  Frs. Dan, Roderick and Liam will each offer a novena of Masses especially for deceased parishioners.
Pre-printed commemoration sheets are available in all our churches for those who would like to write a list of deceased relatives and friends.  These can be placed before the altars and those listed will be remembered during our November Masses.  It is a good and wholesome thing to pray for our dead.

November Remembrance Service
Our annual Parish Remembrance Service takes place on Thursday, 27th November at 7.30pm in St. Fiacre’s Church.  During this service we will remember those who have died, especially those of our parishioners who died during the past year.  All are welcome and invited to attend this special night of prayer .

First Friday Home Visits
The first Friday of November occurs this week. The priests of the parish will visit the housebound and sick at the usual times.  Please contact the Parish Office on 056 776 4400 if you, or anyone you know, would like to be added to the First Friday lis.

All Saints
The Solemnity of All Saints is celebrated on 1st  November in honor of all the saints, known and unknown. In Western Christian theology, the day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in Heaven. It is a national holiday in many historically Catholic countries and is a Holy Day of Obligation in the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church.
The origin of the festival of All Saints celebrated in the West dates to May 13, 609 or 610, when Pope Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to the Blessed Virgin and all the martyrs. The feast of the ‘dedicatio Sanctae Mariae ad Martyres,’ has been celebrated at Rome ever since.  The feast of All Saints, on its current date, is traced to the foundation by Pope Gregory III (731.741) of an oratory in St. Peter's for the relics "of the holy apostles and of all saints, martyrs and confessors, of all the just made perfect who are at rest throughout the world",
In English-speaking countries, the festival is traditionally celebrated with the hymn "For All the Saints" by William Walsham How. The most familiar tune for this hymn is Sine Nomine by Ralph Vaughan Williams.  Catholics generally celebrate All Saints with a day of rest consisting of avoiding physical exertion.

Twenty Nineth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 19th October 2014

That They May Have Life
In October, the Church celebrates Mission Month with World Mission Sunday celebrated on this Sunday, 19th October. The theme for this year is .  We have a long tradition in the Irish Church of mission outreach to the less-well-off in our world.  Over 1,500 Irish Missionaries still serve faithfully the Gospel challenge that you may have life with the poorest in our world.  Talking to the young people in our schools at the moment suggests that a new generation wants to make the difference for the less-well-off in our world.  Praise God for the way the Holy Spirit continues to move our hearts.
Today is Mission Sunday: We thank God for your generosity to the work of the missions. Our diocese contributed more than €23,145 last year which in addition to helping the more than 1,500 Irish people still serving on the missions helps places that are in most need of the basics of food, water etc. This generosity of Kilkenny people continues today in your prayers and practical help on Mission Sunday and in recent years the many lay volunteers who work road for a year or two. Your generous contribution will be sent in its entirety to support many mission projects. We can’t do it without you. Large or small, it makes a difference and thank you for your help.
Pope Francis in the “Joy of the Gospel” calls on all to “take up the role of preacher of the Good News, joyfully bringing Jesus to every street, every town, square, every corner of the earth”.
Please contribute to next weekend’s Mission Sunday collection and continue your prayers for the success of the Church’s mission effort.

Listen To And Learn From Grandparents
“But let me ask you: Do you listen to your grandparents?  Do you open your hearts to the memories that your grandparents pass on?  Grandparents are like the wisdom of the family, they are the wisdom of a people.  And a people that does not listen to grandparents is one that dies!  Listen to your grandparents…  Like the Holy Family of Nazareth, every family is part of the history of a people; it cannot exist without the generations who have gone before it.  Therefore, today we have grandparents and children.  The children learn from their grandparents, from the previous generation.”  (Pope Francis)

Next weekend St. Patrick’s Parish will host a Harvest Thanksgiving Mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Foulkstown at 10.00am on Sunday morning.  As we look around us and see the fruits of this year’s harvest, we give thanks to the Lord for his bounty. Mission Month: That They May Have Life
We have a job to do this October as we celebrate Mission Month. There are approximately 1,500 Irish born missionaries working in more than 80 countries.  They continue to spread the Gospel through their work, their deep commitment to the people they serve and their Faith. In essence, they lead by example and have helped to change, for the better, millions of lives all over the globe. It is fitting then that the theme for this year’s Mission Month of October is ‘That they may have life’...life in all its richness and dignity. The richness of knowing the Gospel and Jesus Christ and the dignity of having food to eat, a roof to sleep under and work to go to.
Through their work, our missionaries strive to make all this a reality for the people they serve. ‘The Society for the Propagation of the Faith’ organises the Mission Sunday collection in all Churches nationwide, which this year takes place on the 19th October. We are invited to reflect on our call to bring Christ to others, while remembering to pray and to assist the young churches, that they may have the spiritual and financial resources to grow and in turn announce the Good News.
For further information about Propagation of the Faith or to make a donation please visit www.wmi.ie.

Month of the Holy Rosary
October is the month of The Holy Rosary. “Say the Rosary every day... Pray, pray a lot and offer sacrifices for sinners... I'm Our Lady of the Rosary. Only I will be able to help you. In the end My Immaculate Heart will triumph.”                                                                 (Our Lady of Fatima)

The Cry of the Earth
To mark the Feast of St Francis of Assisi, (October 4th), the Irish Bishops Conference issued a new call to action for Climate Justice, entitled The Cry of the Earth.  Trócaire launched a Pastoral Resource booklet to encourage Christians to pray, study and act for Justice towards our world and universe.
While we are embroiled in non-stop discussions about new water charges, our world is in danger of serious water shortage, causing literally millions of deaths through starvation or disease. As Christians we have a duty to understand that we are only stewards of God’s creation and to do what we can to treat creation with respect and reverence as God’s gift to all, not the few.
The documents are available on www.trocaire.ie, and offer excellent material for prayer and reflection.

Foulkstown Cemetery
Our mapping and indexing of the old section of our cemetery is nearing completion.  Thanks to all who helped us identify unmarked and unnamed graves.  We now have a better idea of how many and where people are buried.  If you happen to have details about an unmarked grave do contact us and we will be happy to include their names on our files.  In the near future we hope to print a map of the different sections of our cemetery and put this up for people visiting the cemetery to see.  It is our hope that all this work will make finding and maintaining graves easier for everyone.
