2nd Sunday of Lent, 4th March 2012

Evening of Prayer and Reflection
The sisters at Peace in Christ Retreat House invite the people of St. Patrick’s Parish to an evening of Prayer and Reflection at Peace in Christ, Sion Road on Wednesday, 14th March.  This evening provides us with an ideal way of preparing for Easter and is highly recommended for our Eucharistic Ministers and Readers of the Word.  However, all parishioners are welcome.  The evening starts at 8.00pm and concludes at about 10.30pm. Contact Lena McCarthy (777 9012), Adeline Kelly (772 1665)  or Rene Canny (776 2923) for booking and further information.

Each day during Lent a message containing a line of scripture or a thought for the day can be sent by text to your mobile phone. Text your mobile number to Ossory Faith Development at 085 831 3100.

St. Kieran of Ossory
St. Kieran of Ossory, the patron of our diocese, is celebrated on Monday of this week.  St. Kieran is also known as Kieran Saighir. He was born on Cape Clear, Co. Cork in 375 A.D. and is one of the first Irish saints. Legend states that when St Kieran was 30 he went to Rome to learn about the new religion, Christianity. He became a bishop there. Upon his return to Ireland 20 years later, Kieran met St. Patrick who gave him a bell and told him to build a monastery wherever the bell rang.  He went on to say that the bell would ring near a river or stream called Uaran in the middle of the country. The bell rang at Clareen, Co. Offaly (Seir Kieran Parish). It was here that Kieran built his monastery and began his work of spreading the Good News of Christ. It is believed that St Kieran died when he was 90 in the year 465.
St. John of God
John of God (1495 - 1550) was a Portuguese-born friar and saint.  He was born into a once-prominent family that was impoverished but had great religious faith.  His mother died when he was only a small child and his father joined a monastic order.  Under the influence of St. John of Avila he pursued a spiritual life in the service of God.  He died on 8th March 1550, his 55th birthday. He was canonised on 16th October 1690 and later named the patron saint of hospitals, the sick, nurses, firefighters, alcoholics and booksellers.  He is the patron of the Congregation of St. John of God Sisters who live minister in our parish.  His feast day is celebrated on 8th March.
We wish the sisters all the best on the occasion.

Trócaire Lenten Fast
“May the Lord be a refuge for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.” Psalms 9:9.
This second Sunday in Lent we think of Daniel, the little boy on the Trocaire box. Even though he has been through the trauma of civil war, he wants to continue his education so that he might, one day, serve his community as a doctor. Our solidarity with Daniel blesses us with hope for a bright future in Uganda where there has been a dark past. For more information on the Lenten campaign see www.trocaire.org or call 1850 408 408.
Fast Boxes are available at the church doors.
