Fifth Sunday of Lent 2nd March 2008

Life Giving
Many years ago I saw a Hollywood ‘religious’ film about Jesus of Nazareth. Jeffrey Hunter – he of the brilliant blue eyes, for those old enough to remember him – portrayed Jesus. In one scene, the raising of Lazarus to life (today’s Gospel reading), Hunter calls on him to come forth from his tomb. He does, wrapped in layers of loose cloth, except for his face, which would have been better wrapped too. He looked hideous. I thought that if that was what being raised to life meant, he’d have been better left as he was. In today’s first reading Yahweh says he will bring the house of Israel up from its grave and put his spirit within them so that they live. No ghoulish appearance there, no mummified creatures creaking around zombie-like as in a horror film. God gives his Spirit, beautiful, vibrant, and creative. Whoever opens up to that Spirit, in turn becomes beautiful, vibrant and creative. The body is often debased in today’s entertainment industry. Constant exposure to that debasement can degrade one’s respect for the beauty and sanctity of the human body – the dwelling place of God’s Holy Spirit. Nothing debased or second-grade ever comes from the hand of God.
Fr. Tom Cahill

New Life: New Creation
The resurrection of Christ is the beginning of a new creation. “In Him a new age has dawned, the long reign of sin is ended, a broken world has been renewed and human beings are once again made whole”. Our world is enduring another “brokenness” –despoiled, pillaged, polluted. It is surely time for another “New Creation”. Let us pray that the Spirit will inspire us to “renew the face of the earth” so that all who come after us “may have life and have it to the full.” Please support Trocaire this Lent.

St. Patrick’s Day 2008
This year’s liturgical celebration of St Patrick's Day will be held on next Saturday, 15th March as the traditional date falls in Holy Week which this year begins on Monday, 17th March. For the first time since 1913, and the last time until 2160, St Patrick's Day will fall in Holy Week this year. As the days of Holy Week and Easter Week rank above all others St Patrick's Day (and St Joseph's Day) must be transferred. The Vatican had intended transferring the celebrations to April, after Easter week, but at the request of the Irish bishops it agreed to the 15th March date as this would be closer to the civic celebrations of St Patrick's Day.
As a transferred feast the celebration of St Patrick's Day on next Saturday will not be a holy day of obligation. Next weekend Masses in our parish will be as follows:
St. Fiacre’s Church
Friday: 10.30am and 6.15pm
Saturday: 10.30am, 12 noon and 6.15pm
Sunday: 10.30am, 12 noon
Monday: No Mass
St. Patrick’s Church
Friday, 9.30am and 7.00pm
Saturday: 9.30, 11.00am (as gaeilge), 12.30pm & 7.00pm
Sunday: 9.30, 11.00am, 12.30pm
Monday: 11.00am
St. Joseph’s Church
Saturday: 10.00am
Sunday: 10.00am
As a matter of interest, Easter Sunday falls on 23rd March this year, the second earliest date it could be. The earliest date is March 22nd, as Easter Sunday - since the Council of Nicea in AD325 - always falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring equinox. In 1940 an unusual coincidence took place when Palm Sunday occurred on the same day as St. Patrick’s Day. On that day the Irish were able to wear both the palm and the shamrock on the same day. If you were around at the time cherish the memory as this will not happen again until 2391!

Questions people ask
Q. Lazarus was dead for three days before Jesus brought him back to life. Where was his spirit during that time? Did he face his final judgement or was it postponed for a while?
A. Normally a person is pronounced dead when the vital organs cease to function and are beyond repair. However, the departure of the spirit or soul on its journey into God’s revealing light may take longer, especially in the case of sudden death. On that basis the Church advised prayers of absolution or anointing over somebody who has been pronounced dead. The reason underlying the traditional wake is to accompany the departing spirit on its journey from his life. Perhaps we should say of Lazarus that he was dead but not yet departed.

Fourth Sunday of Lent 2nd March 2008

Living with Ambivalence
In Confronting Power and Sex in the Catholic Church, Bishop Geoffrey Robinson writes: ‘In the First Book of Samuel there are two stories of the appointment of Saul as the first king of Israel’. One favours it; one doesn’t, thus indicating the Bible’s ambivalence towards kingly rule over Israel. He concludes, ‘The perfect religious organization, with the divine and human in total harmony, never has and never will exist.’ The same is true for any individual. Take David in today’s first reading. God shows no ambivalence in choosing him as king. But, later David grossly misuses his power to have Bathsheba’s husband, Uriah, killed so he can have her for himself. Yet, God does not disown him. God ‘does not see as mortals see’. He knows that with the evil there is also much good in David. We too must live with ambivalence – in ourselves and in others. Black and white may be easier on the eye than grey, but perhaps compassion is best of all. For, as Timothy Radcliffe OP claims in his book, Sing a New Song, ‘Compassion surely trains the eye to see the loveliness of God in unexpected places’.
Fr. Tom Cahill SVD

Fourth Sunday in Lent: Blindness
Our inner blindness has, in the past, prevented us from seeing the damage we have been doing to creation. Nowadays the information we have on climate change and the devastating effect it is having on those who are least able to cope in the developing world surely means that we can no longer claim “blindness” as an excuse.
The question for each one of us is “What am I going to do with this gift of new sight and understanding? What can I do to help those most in need?” For more information on Trócaire’s Lenten campaign please log onto www.trocaire.org/lent

Third Sunday of Lent, 24th February, 2008

Sophisticated Slavery
In his book Seeking Spirituality Ronald Rolheiser states that the incarnate God is found first and foremost in peoples’ homes. According to him ‘The God of the Incarnation is more domestic than monastic.’ The Israelites, in today’s First Reading didn’t see God that way. For them, he was external: present in a burning bush, in a pillar of cloud, in a pillar of cloud, in a pillar of fire and on a storm tossed mountaintop. So external was he that they doubted his presence at all in time of difficulty. For them, he was a fair-weather god.
When their basic needs were not met, they complained loudly. Forgetful of their recent past of slavery and misery, they bemoaned their perilous present and their uncertain future. They wanted sustenance, security and comfort. Otherwise they would resort to idols for what they wanted.
Are we, modern and sophisticated as we like to think, all that different? Don’t we too have our idols: consumerism, entertainment, fashion, popularity and image? Aren’t we enslaved by the shop-till-you-drop impulse, the must-have craving for the latest fashions and tends, and an insatiable appetite for praise and popularity?
Could we say that our God is not just domestic, but domesticated?
Fr. Tom Cahill SVD

Third Sunday in Lent: Water
Trócaire’s Lenten Campaign this year is focusing on climate change and the issue of water. The water that is around us today is the same water that formed when earth began. No more can be added. We drink the same water that dinosaurs once swam in – the same water that was in Jacob’s Well.
Please help Trócaire’s campaign by remembering to pick up a Trócaire Family Fast Box at the back of the church or go online to www.trocaire.org to see what else you can do.

Questions People Ask
Q. Why was there such enmity between the Samaritans and the Jews?
A. Samaritans were survivors of the ten northern tribes of Israel who broke away from the tribe of Juda (Jews) in 931 BC over the excessive taxes levied for the building of the temple in Jerusalem. Samaritans claimed Mount Gerism, in their territory, was a holy place long before any temple in Jerusalem. When the Assyrians conquered this northern kingdom they sent in five pagan tribes, each with their own religion. The Jews regarded the Samaritan religion as contaminated by these five streams of paganism. The Samaritan woman represented her race in her five marriages and her present relationship which did not merit the name of marriage.

Second Sunday of Lent, 17th February 2008

Rainy Sundays
British novelist Susan Ertz (1894-1985) once remarked that millions long for eternity who wouldn’t know what to do with themselves on a rainy Sunday afternoon. Nowadays, the lure of unreality and cyberspace, from television and the Internet, has eased that problem to some degree. Unfortunately, in so doing virtual reality increasingly substitutes for the real thing.
Our faith, however, carries us far beyond the confines of cyberspace. It propels us to the edge of eternity. It blows our mind with the promise of resurrection and a fullness of life beyond imagining. And, it does so while keeping our feet firmly fixed on mother earth.
The invitation to journey beyond cyberspace and unreality was issued a long time ago to Abraham (Genesis 12: 1-4). He was to leave his familiar surroundings and move without knowing his final destination. He would discover that along the way trust and commitment come first. Fulfillment of promise comes later.
Sunday afternoons were not a problem for Abraham. He had a mission in life to carry out, a future to face, a destiny to fulfil – hail, rain, or snow. May we use our Sunday afternoons wisely. This Lent may they be times to abstain from the self-indulgence of feeling bored.
Fr. Tom Cahill SVD

Second Sunday in Lent: Transformation
Trócaire's Lenten Campaign focuses on climate change and we have been reminded many times in recent years that human activity has changed, TRANSFORMED, our world until it is "sick unto death". Can we now, each of us, begin another TRANSFORMATION. To being to undo whatever part we may have played in that ruination, to begin to restore the planet to health and to ease our fears, anxieties and guilt.
Please remember to pick up a Trocaire box at the back of the church or go online to www.trocaire.org to see what else you can do.

Questions people ask
Why did Jesus tell the three apostles to tell nobody about the transfiguration until after his resurrection?
Surely it would have helped people to believe if they heard about the vision.
Maybe it would have generated excitement about setting Jesus up as a political, revolutionary leader, which would contradict his chosen way of humble service. The glory of the resurrection lay in the future, only after Jesus, the Suffering Servant, had gone through his passion and death. The message for us is that our hope of heavenly glory does not eliminate the struggles and crosses of this life. Yet this hope enables us to keep going.

A Thought for Lent
At the close of life, the question is:
Not how much you have got, But how much you have given.
Not how much you have won, But how much you have done.
Not how much you have saved, But how much you have sacrificed.
Not how much you were honoured , But how much you have loved and served.
The best preparation for tomorrow is to do today’s work superbly well.

First Sunday of Lent 10th February 2008

Temptation
Oscar Wilde’s quip, that he could resist everything except temptation, contains a grain of wisdom. In a quirky way it is saying: careful how you fight temptation; you may not win. Oscar clearly didn’t. Neither did Adam or Eve.
Temptation trades in lies as today’s first reading shows (Genesis 2: 7-9, 3: 1-7). It is countered by truth, as today’s Gospel shows (Matthew 4: 1-11). When tempted to turn stones into bread Jesus doesn’t ‘engage’ with the temptation. He confronts it with truth: God’s word is the source of life, not bread. When Satan tempts him a second time, Jesus warns him not to tempt God. No fear, or indecision, there. Satan ignores the warning and tempts Jesus again. His offer of all the kingdoms on earth to Jesus if only he would worship him is so preposterous that Jesus summarily dismiss him. And he goes. Satan is not as powerful as he would like to be seen to be. While temptation to evil is a fact of life, so too is the victory of good over evil. Evil’s power has been definitively defeated. The Incarnation has seen to that.
Evil has a past, and a present, but no future. Neither do those who submit to it.
Fr Tom Cahill SVD

Questions people ask
Why do we take ashes at the start of Lent?
Ashes are a grimy reminder that our earthly bodies are destined for death and decomposition. ‘Remember that you are but dust and unto dust you shall return.’ An alternative formula at the imposition of ashes exhorts a person to repentance: ‘Turn away from sin and be faithful to the gospel.’ Taking the ashes is not a sort of lucky charm but it is meant to express a person’s intention to undertake some extra spiritual exercises during Lent.
Fr. Silvester O’Flynn OFM Cap

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, 27th January 2008

All for One?
M. Scott Peck wrote in The Different Drum: “Pseudo community is conflict-avoiding; true community is conflict resolving”. In today’s reading Paul would seem to hold a similar view. He appeals to the Corinthians to remember in whose name they were baptised. Respecting their common baptism in Jesus’ name creates unity. As Paul asks them collectively and not individually about their baptism, they must answer collectively. They can do that only by talking constructively together first. Respect for Jesus name is the springboard to that desired exchange. Two things are clear here: baptism unifies; it’s not automatic. Those baptised have to work with their baptism to allow it to have its effect. This doesn’t mean that as soon as we recall our common baptism in Jesus name everything is hunky dory. No more bickering, self-interest or breaking up into groups, gangs or factions. Call them what you will.
But what it does mean is that we’ll have to do some thinking about why we want to be called Christian in the first place and follow with behaviour that shows that why.
Today more than ever conflict resolution, at all levels, is direly needed today being Holocaust Memorial Day.
Fr. Tom Cahill SVD

Questions People Ask
What are the synoptic gospels? Are these a short synopsis of the other gospels?
A. The name ‘Synoptic’ is misleading for us today because it suggests a shorter or abbreviated version of something. But when applied to the gospels it has its original, Greek meaning of writers looking at something from the same point of view. Since the gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke have the same outline plan and more or less the same material, they are known as the Synoptic Gospels. Each of the writers puts his own stamp on the story. Matthew, our Sunday evangelist this year, emphasises the teaching of Jesus about the Kingdom of God on earth.

May their work facilitate the growth and development of the children who are the future of our community.

St. Brigid
Brigid, whose feast is celebrated on Friday, is renowned for her hospitality, almsgiving and care of the sick. She was born c. 454. When she was young her father wished to make a very suitable marriage for her but she insisted in consecrating her virginity to God. She received the veil and spiritual formation probably from St. Mel and stayed for a period under his direction in Ardagh. Others followed her example and this led her to found a double monastery in Kildare with the assistance of Bishop Conleth. She died in 524 and her cult is widespread not only throughout Ireland but in several European lands.

Presentation of the Lord
This feast, celebrated on Saturday, ‘is a combined remembrance of the Son and the Mother… on this day Christ’s faithful people, with candles in their hands, go out to meet the Lord and to acclaim him with Simeon, who recognised Christ as “a light to reveal God to the nations”. They should therefore be taught to walk as children of the light in their entire way of life, because they have a duty to show the light of Christ to all by acting in the works that they do as lighted lamps.’ Ceremonial of Bishops

Candles will be blessed at 9.30am Mass at St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday morning.

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, 20th January 2008

The Good Way
Charm: you have it, until you know it. It’s the same with humility. Better that others be pleased with us for having it than we draw their attention to it in ourselves. If it’s there, it will out as will God’s purpose in human affairs.
Take, for example, the reading for the fourth Sunday of last November: “It is you who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you shall be ruler over Israel” (2 Sam 5:2). Here we have God’s will for King David as ruler of his people Israel. He must act like a shepherd! Not the first model that springs to mind nowadays for civil power.
That same inscrutable intent is evident in today’s gospel reading (Jn 1: 29-34). God wants his Son to be like a lamb! How humble can you get? God really does things in strange ways. You want a ruler. You get a shepherd! Someone comes on a world-changing mission and he is to act like a lamb! Doesn’t make sense. But then it’s not supposed to, at least not by human reckoning. God uses the lowly to confound the great. He always has, and always will. The ball is in our court.
Fr. Tom Cahill.

New Vicar General
Bishop Séamus Freeman has appointed Monsignor Michael Ryan PP, Castlecomer as Vicar General of the Diocese of Ossory. Msgr. Ryan served as Vicar General under former Bishop Laurence Forristal.

Senior Citizens’ Party
Congratulations to all involved in last Monday party for our senior citizens. About 80 people enjoyed dinner and a wonderful evening’s entertainment at Springhill Court Hotel. Well done and thanks to the organisers, band, sponsors and all who attended.

Prayer for Christian Unity
The 100th annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began on Friday, 18th and continues until 25th January, the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul. The annual Week of Prayer has become one of the most symbolic and active signs of Christian unity among Christians around the world. The theme chosen for this year, taken from the First Letter of Paul to the Thessalonians, is "Pray Without Ceasing."
One hundred years ago, Father Paul Watson, Episcopal (Anglican) priest and co-founder of the Friars and Sisters of the Atonement at Graymoor (Garrison, USA), introduced a Prayer Octave for Christian Unity that was first celebrated from 18 to 25 January 1908. Soon after, Catholic and Protestant groups around the world took up this practice. In 1965, the tradition was formally endorsed and promoted by the leaders of the major Christian Churches when the World Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order and the Roman Catholic Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity (now known as the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity) began official joint preparation of materials for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.
This weekend we welcome some guests from neighbouring Christian Churches to our parish. The Rev. Cecil Weekes will speak to the congregation at the 6.15 p.m. Mass at St. Fiacre’s Church and the Rev. Ian Coulter will address the congregation at our 7.00 p.m. Mass at St. Patrick’s Church on Saturday evening. Representing the local Church of Ireland community these men will share a few thoughts with us on this year’s theme and join us in prayer for the success of the week’s events.
Bishop Séamus Freeman will speak at St. Canice’s Cathedral on Sunday while Bishop Michael Burrows will address the congregation at St. Mary’s Cathedral. Members of our clergy will make similar visits to other Protestant churches in the city.

Questions People Ask
Q. Jesus was called the Lamb of God. Does this just refer to his innocence and gentleness or has it some deeper meaning?
A. John the Baptist identified Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Before the time of Jesus there were multiple sacrifices of animals to make atonement for sin. The perfect sacrifice of Jesus replaced all these sin offerings.
The lamb of sacrifice, standing over the altar, is at the centre of the apparition at Knock. For a beautiful book on this, read Reflecting at Knock by Fr. Tom Lane.

“God Bless You”
According to the ancient author Pliny (ca. A.D. 77), the custom of saluting someone who sneezes was well-established by the time of Tiberius Caesar, the Roman emperor during the earthly life of Jesus. However, the particular formula, ‘God bless you’ (or Gesundheit in German) may have begun during the time of Pope St. Gregory the Great (A.D. 600) in response to a plague sweeping Rome, the initial symptom of which was a sneeze. A similar explanation has been given for covering one’s mouth when one yawns, which initially began as the sign of the cross over one’s mouth.
Why Do Catholics Eat Fish on Friday?; Michael P. Foley

Some Ecumenical Humour
A rabbi and minister decided to invite the new Catholic PP on a fishing trip. While out on the lake, the rabbi announced ‘We forgot the bait, I’ll go get it’. He jumped out of the boat, walked across the water to the shore, collected the bait and walked back. The PP was amazed. An hour later they started to get hungry. The minister volunteered to go get some food. He jumped out of the boat, walked across the water, collected the food and walked back again. The PP was astounded. A little later they ran out of drinking water. The PP announced that he would go get some. The PP jumped out of the boat... and sank straight to the bottom. Upon surfacing he heard the rabbi say to the minister, ‘I suppose we should have shown him where the stepping stones are.’
