Sts Peter & Paul, 29th June 2014

Corpus Christi Procession
The postponed fourth annual Corpus Christi procession through the streets of Kilkenny will take place on this Sunday.  Please assemble in the grounds of St. John’s Church at 1.45pm for a 2.00pm start.  The procession concludes with benediction at St. Mary’s Cathedral.  This year’s First Holy Communicants are invited to wear their outfits and participate.

Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul
On this Sunday, 29th June, the Church celebrates the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul. As early as the year 258, there is evidence of an already lengthy tradition of celebrating the solemnities of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul on the same day.  Together, the two saints are the founders of the See of Rome, through their preaching, ministry and martyrdom there.
In a sermon in the year 395, St. Augustine of Hippo said of Sts. Peter and Paul: “Both apostles share the same feast day, for these two were one; and even though they suffered on different days, they were as one. Peter went first, and Paul followed. And so we celebrate this day made holy for us by the apostles’ blood. Let us embrace what they believed, their life, their labours, their sufferings, their preaching, and their confession of faith.”

Collection for the Holy Father
The annual collection for the Holy Father (formerly Peter’s Pence) will be taken up at all Masses this weekend. The proceeds will be forwarded to Rome for use in Papal charities.  Please support.

 Feast of St. Oliver Plunkett
St. Oliver Plunkett’s feast day is celebrated on next Tuesday, 1st July.  He was born in Loughcrew, Co. Meath in1625. He studied for the priesthood in the Irish College in Rome and was ordained in 1654. He was known for his holiness and learning. After ordination he spent fifteen years teaching in Rome where, in 1669, he was ordained Archbishop of Armagh. He returned to Ireland where the Penal Laws were being enforced and priests and bishops were being hunted down.
Oliver Plunkett suffered much and were forced to go around in disguise. In 1670 Oliver Plunkett was captured and imprisoned in Dublin Castle. He was accused of inciting the Catholics to rebel against the government and was sentenced to death. On 1st July 1681 he was hanged drawn and quartered in Tyburn.
His head is preserved in St. Peter’s Church, Drogheda and his relics are in Downside Abbey in England.  He was canonised by Pope Paul V1 on the 12th October 1975.
