Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 28th June 2009

Deanery Pastoral Council Update
The second meeting of the newly formed Middle Deanery Pastoral Council took place in Peace in Christ Retreat House on 10th June 2009. The Council, which consists of a lay representative of each parish along with priests and religious representing the deanery, is part of the newly restructured Ossory Diocesan Forum. The purpose of this locally based new model of the Forum is to promote a more neighbourly context for an effective Gospel response to local challenges.

The meeting was told that one of its aims was the establishment of Parish Pastoral Councils in all parishes over the next four years. Fr Richard Scriven has been asked to help parishes to set up and provide training for these Pastoral Councils. Also discussed were the roles of chairperson, secretary and co-ordinator of the Deanery Pastoral Council which are expected to be appointed at the next meeting on 16th September.

The impact which the recent Ryan Commission Report was having on the younger generation was discussed. The resultant “why bother attitude” can only be dealt with by a proactive rather than a reactive approach by both the adult laity and the clergy to what was a societal problem. Lay members assured the clergy and religious of their support for the very hard work they are doing.

Made for Life
One venomous description of a gossip I came across recently was: someone who won’t tell a lie if the truth can do more damage. Yet I suspect that today’s First Reading (Wis 1:13-15, 2:23-24) refers to that type of thing in some way when it tells us that God did not make death and does not delight in the death of the living (John 10:10). Realising that we are made in God’s image, we too should not ‘make death’ nor delight in the death of anyone – not just their physical death, but in anything that diminishes the quality of their life. Every day we have life and death in our hands, in a manner of speaking. We can raise up, or bring down. We can praise, or criticise. We can work with, or plot against. We can bring joy, or instil fear. We can have people love us, or hate us. The choice is ours. Temperament has a lot to do with this, but not everything. Much depends on our awareness and our generosity. Somebody once remarked that since we have to look someway it might as well be positively.
There is so much gloom and doom around at times, you’d wonder if we really realise in whose image and likeness we’re made: the God of life and creativity.
Fr. Tom Cahill SVD.

Questions People Ask
Q. About the people who were dead but brought back to life by Jesus, where were their souls between dying and coming back to life?
A. Normally a person is pronounced dead when the vital organs cease to function in supporting life. That is physical death. However, the departure of the spirit or soul on it’s final journey towards God’s revealing light may take longer. The custom of waking the dead grew out of the idea of accompanying the soul on its journey from this life. Perhaps we could say of Lazarus and the daughter of Jairus, they were dead but not yet departed.

Meeting of City Pastoral Councils
A meeting of the four Parish Pastoral Councils of the Kilkenny City parishes took place in St Patrick's Centre on Monday, 14th June. The meeting was the first in which the four Pastoral Councils met and discussed pastoral issues that are common to the four parishes. The meeting was facilitated by Fr Liam Power from the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore. He guided the meeting to prioritising four areas to which we could give attention. After much discussion and debate the areas were narrowed to the following four projects: A Response to the Ryan Report; A Youth Mass; Baptismal Teams; and Training of Lectors. A member from each Parish Pastoral Council was invited to form a sub-committee and these tasks are now in hand. A further meeting of the four Councils will take place in November.

Knock-Knock, who’s there??
Our Lady’s Shrine in Knock has over 1.6 million visitors a year. When most people think of the average age of these visitors they may well be right in thinking it’s the older generation that make up this number, however hundreds of young people flock to Knock for the annual Knock Summer Youth Festival. This time of year Knock is truly alive and buzzing with young people. The Knock Summer Youth Festival has been running for the past 8 years. This year the festival will take place from the 23rd of July to the 26th of July.
Hundreds of young people from all over the world will camp over three nights near the spot where the Virgin Mary appeared to a group of local people in 1879.
Watch this space for further details or go to the Knock website at www.knock-shrine.ie/youthfestival and view a video of last year’s festival activities.

Church Gate Collections
Collections at the church gates are not organised by the parish. They are subject to licensing laws and must have a Garda permit. Once a permit is held collectors have a right to stand in a public place and seek contributions.

Questions People Ask
Q. The Catholic Church is totally out of date in saying that pre-marital sex is wrong. Everybody is doing it. Isn’t it time the Church accepted reality?
A. To follow your principle of everybody doing it, supposing every employee is stealing from their firm, does it make it morally right? The Church is obliged to proclaim the teaching of Jesus Christ and cannot change its morality by majority vote. In the only instance of majority vote in the Gospels, guess what, a murderer called Barabbas was released and Jesus, though innocent was condemned to death. An opinion poll is a dangerous basis for a moral decision.

Year For Priests
The greatest suffering of the Church is the sin of its priests, Benedict XVI said as he inaugurated the Year for Priests at a celebration of vespers on the solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Basilica of St. Peter's. The theme for the priestly year is “Faithfulness of Christ, Faithfulness of Priests.” The year, convoked by the Pontiff, coincides with the 150th anniversary of the death of St. John Mary Vianney, known as the Curé d’Ars.
“The Church needs holy priests,” the Pope said in his homily. “[It needs] ministers to help the faithful experience the merciful love of the Lord and to be convinced witnesses.” For this, he invited the faithful to pray “that the Lord inflame the heart of each priest” with the love of Jesus.
“How can one forget that nothing makes the Church – the Body of Christ – suffer more than the sins of its priests, above all those that are ‘wolves in sheep’s clothing,’ whether because they lead [the faithful] away with their private doctrine, or because they bind [the faithful] down with the ties of sin and death,” he asked.
“The call to conversion and to take recourse to Divine Mercy also applies to us, dear priests,” Benedict XVI said to the numerous priests and bishops present. “We should also appeal, humbly and incessantly, to the heart of Jesus so that he preserves us from the terrible risk of damaging those whom we should save.”
For this, the Pope affirmed, “Our mission is indispensable for the Church and for the world, which demands complete fidelity to Christ and an incessant union with him; that is to say, it demands that we constantly seek the holiness of St. John Mary Vianney.”

Corpus Christi, 14th June 2009

Summer General Meeting of the Irish Bishops’ Conference - Press Release
The Bishops discussed the failure of Church institutions to protect children and to prevent the extensive level of sexual, physical and emotional abuse, and neglect, as documented by the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse Report, by Mr Justice Sean Ryan, published on 20 May last.
The Bishops said, “The Ryan Report represents the most recent disturbing indictment of a culture that was prevalent in the Catholic Church in Ireland for far too long. Heinous crimes were perpetrated against the most innocent and vulnerable, and vile acts with life-lasting effects were carried out under the guise of the mission of Jesus Christ. This abuse represents a serious betrayal of the trust which was placed in the Church. For this we ask forgiveness. We are ashamed, humbled and repentant that our people strayed so far from their Christian ideals.
“At our meeting we devoted a lot of time discussing the Report. While we need time to reflect on the detail of the report, and we offer the following as an initial response as a Conference:
· Our first reaction is a heavy sadness at the suffering of so many for so long.
· We wish to invite survivors to engage with us to see how we can assist those who have been abused.
· We wish to respond as pastors despite the inadequacies at times of our previous pastoral responses.
· We urge the whole Church community to join with us in praying for the well being and peace of mind for all who suffered.”
The Bishops reflected on the visit of Cardinal Brady and Archbishop Martin to Rome and their meeting with Pope Benedict XVI on Friday. Cardinal Brady and Archbishop Martin informed the Holy Father, and the heads of the Rome Congregations, on the content and impact of the Ryan report and other issues facing the Irish Church.
The Holy Father once again urged the Bishops and all in the Church to continue to establish the truth of what happened and why; to ensure that justice is done for all; to see that measures put in place to prevent abuse from happening again are fully applied, and, to help to bring healing to the survivors of abuse.
Feast of Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi is Latin for ‘Body of Christ’. The feast of Corpus Christi celebrates our belief that what we receive in Holy Communion is not bread and wine but the true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. To emphasise the centrality of this belief Corpus Christi has been a universal feast of the Church since the 13th Century and in many places is marked with a Eucharistic procession. Indeed, Pope Benedict led such a procession through Rome on last Thursday evening, from St. John Lateran to St. Mary Major. Behind him thousands of people joined in prayers and hymns as they walked. Various fraternities and parish groups carried banners as they marched, and buildings along the route were decorated with Eucharistic banners, added to the colourful procession.
“Nourishment that sustains…”
Pope Benedict stressed the importance of the feast in his homily in Rome on Thursday evening, declaring that the Body and Blood of Christ are “the indispensable nourishment that sustains [Christians] as they cross the desert of this world, made barren by ideological and economic systems that fail to promote life . . . a world dominated by the logic of power and possession rather than by the logic of service and of love; a world in which the culture of violence and death often triumph.”

Questions People Ask
Q. What did Jesus mean by the blood of the new covenant?
A. The Bible is a library of two testaments. The Old Testament is about God’s first covenant with his people, a covenant given through Noah, Abraham and Moses. The New Testament is the documentation of the new covenant, inaugurated by Jesus Christ, by which we are raised up as children of God. Before the time of Jesus, people regularly renewed their side of the covenant by offering blood sacrifices. The new covenant was ratified once and for all in the blood of Jesus, shed on Calvary.

Not à la Carte
Johnny got the message early in life. When asked by his religion teacher what he thought of God he replied with a gravity beyond his young years, ‘I bet it’s very hard for him to love all of everybody in the whole world. There are only four people in our family and I can never do it.’ Out of the mouth of babes! In today’s First Reading from the Book of Exodus (24:3-8) the word ‘all’ is used repeatedly. In brief: all the people promise obedience to all the words of the Lord. There’s no half measure, no à la carte approach to God’s commands. There wasn’t then, and there isn’t now. Today we celebrate the feast of The Body and Blood of Christ, or Corpus Christi as it’s more popularly known. The Eucharist that Christ gave us is a meal open to all people who have committed themselves in faith to Jesus as Saviour. The Eucharist, while it needs to be celebrated in a manner that expresses life, joy and community, is not an entertainment event. It’s joyful yet serious, lively yet dignified and, in a sense, ‘ordinary’ yet holy. What we need to realise too, however, is that it also requires effort on our part to prepare for it and further effort to celebrate it well. That’s where the ‘all’ comes in again. We can’t prepare for the Eucharist with only part of our life. Following Jesus is a total life-long commitment. How could anyone celebrate Mass on a Sunday, having lived like a pagan on Saturday?

An Unholy Distance
The heavenly honorific of today’s feast puts me in mind of the teacher who told her six-year-olds to write to God and ask him a question. I’m sure he smiled at Jeannie’s. She wrote, ‘Dear God, in bible times did they really talk that fancy?’
Jesus never spoke ‘fancy’ about his Father. So, why should we? Two possibilities come to mind. First, we want to be reverential. The problem here, however, is that the language we use when ‘reverential’ can be all head and no heart. Consequently, we put God at a distance he neither wants nor observes. Love draws, it doesn’t repel. So, if we call God a trinity, how can we call love an abstraction? Second, we don’t have a clue who, or what, God is. This may be truer than we feel comfortable admitting. So we resort to abstraction. Now for some peculiar reason the more abstractly you present something the more profound some people think you are. I tend to think the opposite. It’s only when you know something inside out that you can describe it simply. Profundity and simplicity go hand-in-hand, not profundity and abstraction – unless, of course, God can be reduced to a mathematical equation.
So how then to talk of God? Well if the purpose is to reveal God in some way, talk is not the best way to go about it. Example is. Just as surely as talk of love can never replace the real thing, so ‘trinity’ can never replace the simplicity of Father, Son and the Love between them.

Parish Pilgrimage to Knock
The annual St. Joseph’s Young Priests Society pilgrimage to Knock will be held on Saturday, 27th June. Over 5,000 pilgrims from all over Ireland will be in Knock on that day. Our annual parish pilgrimage will also be on this day and accordingly we have joined forces with the local branch of the St. Joseph’s Young Priests Society to organise a coach. Bookings at the Parish Office or with Doreen Griffin. Please book early.

Questions People Ask
Q. Would it make any difference if I believed in one God without the complications of three divine persons?
A. It would matter hugely. By neglecting the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity you would miss the revelation of the inner life of God as revealed in the teaching of Jesus, far advanced beyond the Old Testament. Nor could one understand the divinity of Jesus, nor the sacrifice of Jesus in offering himself freely to the Father, nor the sending of the Holy Spirit, nor the movement of the Mass which is going to the Father, in and through the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Signed Mass Cards
Mass cards for various occasions are available at the Parish Centre reception desk. These cards are signed by the priests of the parish and an individual Mass is said for each intention.
These cards have proven to be very successful and we’re happy to provide this service, especially if it does away with all the fake Mass cards available in many shops and for which Masses aren’t said.
The Mass cards that are signed by us are gathered together and where there is a surplus the intention and stipend (money) is forwarded to the missions. For this purpose we have enlisted the assistance of Aid to the Church in Need (www.acnirl.org), who make sure the individual Masses are offered by missionary and Third World priests for each particular intention.
Mass stipends are a vital source of income for missionary and Third World priests and you are assured the Most Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your particular intention.

Those intending to use the centre must have regard for our Catholic Ethos and adhere to our child protection policy, a copy of which is available at the reception desk.
Each group intending to use the Parish Centre will be assessed on our ability to meet their needs but sometimes, even with the greatest will this is not possible. For further details please contact Ted Byrne or Fr. Liam.

Pentecost Sunday, 31st May 2009

Taxi Driver
This story tells what Pentecost is about. A taxi driver arrives at an address. He honks his horn. No response. He honks again. Still no response. Out he gets and knocks on the door. A stressed voice cries out, ‘Just a minute, please.’ After a long pause he hears something being dragged to the door. A frail old woman in her 80s opens the door pulling a suitcase after her. ‘Would you carry my case to the car, please?’ she asks. ‘Sure,’ he says, and as he moves off she links his free arm and walks slowly with him to the taxi. She gives him an address and asks him to go through the city centre. ‘It’s not the shortest way, Ma’am,’ he says to her. ‘I don’t mind,’ she replies, ‘I’m going to a hospice. There’s no hurry.’ He looks in the rear-view mirror, and sees tears in her eyes as she reveals, ‘I’ve no family left. The doctor says I haven’t long to go.’ As she says that the driver leans over and quietly switches off the metre. They drive around the city centre. She points out where she had worked in an insurance office, where she and her husband had lived after their wedding, and a building that once was a ballroom where she had first met him. At one or two places they stop in silence – her mind elsewhere. Much later they reach the hospice. The taxi driver goes home lost in thought, convinced and content that he has just had one of the most important days of his life. Pentecost means using the language of love.

Questions People Ask
Q. When my daughter was baptised the priest explained the importance of her Christian name. Now that she is preparing for Confirmation will she have to take on another name?
A. Taking a new name at Confirmation is still an option but it is no longer required. As you rightly assert, taking a name with some Christian association at Baptism is very significant. We associate naming with christening. One may choose to add a new name at Confirmation but many prefer to use the baptismal name as it shows the unity of the two sacraments.

The Ascension of the Lord, 24th May 2009

Strange Attraction
In his book, Jesus Today, Albert Nolan writes, ‘It seems that systems of various kinds often exist in a state of chaos or, as they say, “on the edge of chaos,” and then suddenly and unpredictably there emerges something called a “strange attractor” that rearranges the chaos into some new order.’ Today, on the feast of the Ascension we celebrate not the arrival but the departure of the strange attractor: the Risen Lord.Change ‘systems’ to ‘individuals’ above and you have many a person’s life story. Confusion and doubt are necessary for intellectual and psychological growth. As Timothy Ferris writes in Coming of Age in the Milky Way, ‘Yet it is turmoil and confusion and not calm assurance that mark the growth of the mind.’ Into our personal confusion steps the ‘strange attractor’. As we flounder, his helping hand pulls us up and out of our confusion – not, however, on to a placid and permanent plateau, but to a higher level of confusion. No sooner are our feet placed firmly on Mother Earth than we are whisked to heights that make us dizzy. If our faith doesn’t s-t-r-e-t-c-h our mind, we’re not people of faith, but people of reason. Belief in the Ascension should make us gasp. Do we realise what we’re saying we actually believe in! First: that someone flatline dead didn’t just revive and return to his former state but resurrected to a higher, super-human, everlasting one. Second: having done so, then ‘ascended’ to a totally new quantum-leap environment we call ‘heaven’.
Wow! Wow! Wow! is all I can say.

Richard Quirke Support Fund
The Committee of the Richard Quirke Support Fund would like to thank you for your generosity in respect of the Musical Feast held recently in St. John's Church, Kilkenny. We had a very successful and enjoyable evening. Thank you to all involved for the wonderful support.

First Holy Communion
We congratulate the boys from St. Patrick’s De La Salle who received their First Holy Communion yesterday and the boys and girls from Kilkenny School Project who will receive theirs today.

Questions people ask
Q. What does the Ascension add to the Resurrection of Jesus? Surely it means something more than his body floating up into the sky?
A. Forty days in the Bible is a block of time when something important is happening. These days from Easter to Ascension were an important transition period for the disciples. Jesus was no longer physically present with them but in various appearances he showed that he had not deserted them, and he prepared them to continue his mission. The Ascension, on the fortieth day, marks the closure of this period of transition. After some days of prayerful preparation they would receive the power of the Holy Spirit to commence their new mission.

Sixth Sunday in Easter, 17th May 2009

Congratulations on Confirmation
This weekend we congratulate 110 young people from schools in our parish who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday. Well done to the young people, their parents, guardians and families. Thanks to the sponsors and to all involved in the ceremony.
A special word of thanks to our dedicated teachers who worked to prepare our young people, not just for today, but for the rest of their lives.

Appeasing God
Today’s First Reading is a tricky one. Having just told us the wonderful news that ‘God is love’ (v8), John now seems to undo it all by saying that God ‘sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins’ (v10). Here we have that seemingly awful image of God, as the one who demands appeasement for the sins of humanity by the death of his beloved Son. So which is it? It can’t be both, can it? How can a God who is love possibly want the one he loves to be slaughtered to appease him? To put it bluntly: is there some way of honouring the text without dishonouring God? Now you can try to resolve the dilemma by saying it is God’s love for us that compels him to send his son to be killed. But, the possibility that God could love human beings more than his ‘beloved’ son stretches the mind that little bit too far, don’t you think? If God, indeed, is love, and totally independent in how he expresses it, then why on earth would he demand sacrificial appeasement? Does that not smack of hardness of heart, even vindictiveness? You may introduce justice into the equation and claim that divine justice demands it. But is that not making love subservient to justice? And love is greater. Indeed, as Paul says in 1Cor 13:13 ‘the greatest of all is love’. Once God forgives, justice goes out the door. So, are love and demands for appeasement mutually exclusive? If you find out, let me know.

Questions People Ask
Q. How can I answer somebody who claims that May devotion to Mary is the ancient cult of a goddess of fertility and that Queen of Heaven was the title of a pagan goddess in Egypt?
A. The Bible shows how good elements of pagan festivals were adopted as the framework for the great Jewish feasts of the events of salvation. The Christian Church retained this biblical practice in giving a new meaning to the Passover and Pentecost, as well as replacing the pagan feast of mid-winter with Christmas. If May’s beautiful blossoms are the promise of a fertile harvest, what’s wrong in using them to remind us of Mary’s fertile womb in which the Word was made flesh?

SERVE
SERVE is an initiative committed to tackling world poverty. Emerging from a tripartite partnership between young Irish adults, Irish Redemptorists and marginalised communities in the developing world, SERVE works to empower vulnerable and excluded groups and communities to become the agents of their own transformation.
Every year SERVE sends over 80 volunteers to work in partnership with local communities in South Africa, Mozambique, Thailand, the Philippines, India and Brazil. This summer, Stephanie Burke and Robbie Shortall will travel to the Philippines to spent 6 weeks volunteering with SERVE, working on projects such as the Sarinelli Street Children’s project, providing education, training and building self-esteem in vulnerable youth.
At our masses in St. Fiacre’s Church next weekend, Stephanie will speak about the work both Robbie and herself hope to do. There will be a special collection after Mass, the proceeds of which will go entirely to the project on which they will be working.
If you can, please support this wonderful project with prayers and donations. All proceeds will go directly to the vulnerable poor. Thanks in advance for your generosity.
