The Immaculate Heart of Mary
Ireland will be consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on 15th August, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The consecration will take place at Knock Shrine, during the annual Novena to Our Lady of Knock.  Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, will lead the Act of Consecration. Archbishop Eamon Martin, Coadjutor Archbishop of Armagh will be the principal celebrant and preacher at the Mass on that day.  Bishops, priests and people from across the country will be in attendance.
The Prayer of Consecration will entrust families, homes and the dioceses of Ireland to Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary and call on her to watch over the young people of Ireland.  As the universal Church is currently celebrating a Year of Faith, it is fitting that the Act of Consecration calls to mind the woman of faith par excellence and asks for her prayers for the people of this country.
Commenting ahead of the Consecration Cardinal Brady said: “In his recent encyclical for the Year of Faith, Pope Francis invited us to turn to Mary, Mother of the Church and Mother of our Faith.  I am very pleased that the Irish Catholic Bishops decided at their June meeting to consecrate Ireland to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. I am looking forward to being at our National Shrine in Knock on the 15th August to ask Mary’s maternal blessing on the people of Ireland.  The Feast of the Assumption is one of the biggest days of the year in Knock, with bishops, priests and people present for the opening of the Novena.  I invite the people of Ireland to come along to Knock on the day or to join in this beautiful devotional act by praying the prayer of entrustment in their homes and parish churches.”
We encourage parishioners to consider making a pilgrimage to Knock for this long-anticipated occasion.

Seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, 28th July 2013

Cemetery Mass
Sincere thanks to all who worked long and hard to make the annual cemetery Mass in Foulkstown last Thursday such a success.  There was a tremendous turnout for this special occasion of remembering deceased loved ones.
The members of the Cemetery Committee wish to offer a special thanks to all who contributed so generously towards the cemetery collection and the money will be put to good use maintaining the cemetery throughout the year ahead.
Special note:  As there are no longer facilities available in Foulkstown for disposing of dead flowers, wrappings etc. (Blame the illegal dumpers who were using the skip to get rid of household waste), we ask people who are maintaining graves to take their waste items home with them and dispose of them in a proper manner.  Thanks for your cooperation on this matter.

You will never be disappointed!
Pope Francis has asked young pilgrims attending this week’s World Youth Day celebrations to keep Jesus at the “centre of their lives.”  Pope Francis asked young Catholics to imagine they were with Jesus on the seashore and asked them to follow Jesus and share his love with others, as he addressed them earlier this week on Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro.  Faith, he said, is “an operation that shifts concerns and priorities so that they revolve around Jesus and not the individual or false idols”.
“Certainly possessions, money and power can give a momentary thrill, the illusion of being happy,” he said, “but they end up possessing us and making us always want to have more, never satisfied.”  Instead, he said, with Christ as the centre of your life “you will never be disappointed,” but, he added, “the young must be strong” to resist the temptations around them.
Regularly updated reports on World Youth Day will be available on www.catholicbishops.ie

Rain on St. Swithin’s Day
St. Swithin’Day if thou dost rain, for forty days it will remain
St. Swithin’Day if thou be fair for forty days ‘twill rain nae mair.
On this Monday, 15th July, St. Swithin’s Day, many people will be on the alert for the weather forecast.  According to tradition, if the sun shines on this date forty days sunshine are in store. But alas if it rains, forty days of downpour will follow. Jane Struthers informs us in her book, Red Sky at Night, that the Meteorological Office researched this theory and declared it to be without foundation.
St. Swithin was bishop of Winchester in England and wished to be buried out of doors, breaking with the tradition of bishops being buried in the Cathedral.  Nine years later, an attempt was made to exhume his body and take it to the Cathedral, but gales blew, rain fell and the attempt had to be abandoned.
Let us be happy and patient with whatever weather God sends us, as patience brings relief.
Say the following prayer and one never knows what will happen: Lord God, send us rain but not wet weather, may tomorrow’s amount fall tonight. Amen.
